POST-DETENTION RESOURCES

If a Family Member or Loved One Has Been Detained by ICE

Step 1: Get the Guide

Review the National Immigration Project Guide for step-by-step instructions: NIPNLG Checklist (Spanish) | NIPNLG Checklist (English)

Step 2: Locate Their A-Number

  • If they have previously filed an immigration application or were processed at the border, locate their A-number (A#) on any immigration documents
  • If you don't have the A#, contact the Los Angeles ICE Enforcement Office at 213-830-7911

Step 3: Confirm the Arrest and Location

Confirm where your loved one is being held by using the ICE Detainee Locator: ICE Detainee Locator

You'll need their full name, country of birth, and A-number if available.

Step 4: Contact the Detention Facility

ICE has information about detention centers on their website, including visiting hours and legal/case information: ICE Detention Facilities

Once located, contact the detention facility directly to arrange phone calls, visits, or to learn how to send funds for commissary items.

If You Have Communication with the Person:

Advise them to protect their rights:

  • They have the right to remain silent and may refuse to answer questions about their immigration status without legal counsel
  • Seek legal representation as soon as possible
